Concept: The restaurant, a franchised branch of a chain, has been envisaged as a culinary journey and a rediscovery of India through its flavours. With perfectly executed dishes from across the country – a mix of classics and innovations on old favourites – it certainly gives the diner food experiences from across the country. The décor, with uniquely Indian touches, reasserts the theme.
Location & Setting: Bombay Brasserie enjoys the advantage of being on 12th Main, the prime restaurant street in Indiranagar, Bangalore’s upscale area. Its design and the ambience it creates allows the restaurant to stand out amidst the string of F&B outlets along this stretch. A residence has been artfully converted into a dining room and there’s an al fresco space at the front where customers can occupy comfortable swing seats. Indoors, colourful tiles and carefully chosen artefacts create a charming setting.
Food: The menu lists small plates, which are, in fact, hearty portions. Top dishes in this section include the Calcutta Club Fish Fry, served with kasundi and a mango salsa that is redundant. Signature street kebabs appear as Hot Plates and Street Grills. An excellent Lucknowi Paraath Paneer and Galawati Kebab make their appearance here. Paired Curries are classic curries with the ideal accompaniment, such as Mario’s Mango Prawns served with Coconut Rice. Mains are made up of such choices as Mushroom Masala Roast with South Indian flavours and Jaipur Kofta. Desserts traverse the country too, from Amritsari Kulfa to Bombay Ice Cream Sandwich.
Drink: The well-stocked bar shakes up some good cocktails that carry the Indian flavor theme forward. There’s the Calcutta Kick, inspired by Calcutta’s saada paan and Fauji Party Special, with rum and pineapple juice, reliving army gatherings and revelry.
Service: The wait staff is smart, articulate and eager to please, proving that they have benefited from some very good training.
Aced this: Nearly all the food is very well prepared. The High Chai, from 3.30 pm to 7 pm is a smart idea, bringing customers in for chai and desi snacks.
Not this: The menu, running into several pages, is also bewildering with its sub-sections.
